Project Description
This is a project for vocational training in knitting and subsequent job placement for pregnant teens in Bertha Calderon Women’s Hospital in Managua, Nicaragua. Cost: $300/month for 8 months
Objectives: - Empower pregnant teens (many of whom are in their current position through being coerced into the child sex trade) to have an alternative to prostitution to take care of themselves and their babies.
- Train the participants in knitting as a tool to create baby clothes for their own children and other products such as dolls, tablecloths, sweaters, etc.
- Distribute the products created by the teens to have a sustainable income outside of prostitution to care for themselves and to have the resources to keep their babies
- Contribute to ending the cycle of child abandonment as a primary cause of child prostitution on Nicaragua’s streets.
- Create a context for creativity, play, and moral and emotional and spiritual development and support for these mothers who are still children themselves.
Target Group: 30 pregnant teens who are members of the Teen Club at Bertha Calderon Roque Women’s Hospital, Managua. Duration and Sessions: The course lasts eight months, with one session weekly for 2 and a half hours, in the auditorium of the hospital. Monthly Budget: - Teacher’s salary………………$50
